The Tigers will build long reliever Drew Anderson up as a starting pitcher, manager A.J. Hinch told reporters (link via Chris McCosky of The Detroit News). They’ll also activate Jackson Jobe during this weekend’s series in San Francisco.
Those will be the immediate replacements for Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize. Anderson will take the ball tomorrow at T-Mobile Park, where the Mariners will trot out Bryan Woo. Detroit has Troy Melton on the bump tonight and will pitch Framber Valdez in Thursday’s finale. They haven’t announced their rotation for the weekend. They can pitch Keider Montero in the opener and officially reinstate Jobe from the 60-day injured list for Saturday’s ballgame.
Detroit picked up Anderson on a one-year, $7MM free agent contract in December. He returned to the majors after a four-year run in Asia, the last two of which came with the SSG Landers of the Korea Baseball Organization. Anderson signed expecting to compete for a rotation spot. The Tigers wound up adding Valdez late in the offseason when he couldn’t find a long-term deal. That pushed Anderson to the bullpen.
The 32-year-old righty has technically made two starts, though one of them was essentially kicking off a bullpen game. He has otherwise pitched in relief and had a solid season, turning in a 4.24 ERA across 63 2/3 innings. Anderson has an excellent 28.3% strikeout rate and has gotten his walks in check after a shaky first month. He was working in long relief somewhat frequently early in the season but has mostly been in 1-2 inning stints since the beginning of June.
It’s a welcome audition for Anderson, who’s also trying to convince the front office to pick up a $10MM club option for next year. Detroit will need to build his pitch count gradually over multiple starts. It seems they’ll give him a legitimate chance to do so, as there’s no current timetable for Jack Flaherty or Justin Verlander to return from the injured list.
Jobe’s appearance this weekend will be his first in the big leagues in 14 months. The former #3 overall pick underwent Tommy John surgery last June. Jobe was in his first season as an MLB starter after briefly debuting in relief in 2024. He made 10 starts as a rookie, posting a 4.22 ERA despite a subpar strikeout and walk profile. Jobe was one of the sport’s top pitching prospects when he made his debut and has shown huge stuff on his rehab assignment. He’s averaging nearly 99 mph on his four-seam fastball.
That’s an obviously encouraging sign for Jobe’s elbow. He threw four innings and 69 pitches during his most recent rehab start with High-A West Michigan. The Tigers will also need to keep tabs on his pitch count. That’s going to put a lot on the bullpen with Jobe and Anderson each building up midseason.
There’s also a decent chance the Tigers get their first look at River Ryan before the season is out. One of two headlining prospects in their Skubal return, Ryan has been on the Triple-A injured list since the middle of June. Robert Murray of FanSided reports that the 27-year-old is dealing with glute and hamstring issues but expected back by the end of August. Ryan hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2024 because of various injuries (most notably Tommy John surgery) but has huge stuff and an excellent strikeout/walk profile over eight starts in Triple-A this year.
The Skubal and Mize trades were Detroit’s only moves of deadline season. They elected to hold fringier trade candidates like Anderson, Gleyber Torres, Kenley Jansen, Kyle Finnegan and Spencer Torkelson. Detroit is sixth in the AL in scoring and just called up top center field prospect Max Clark. This should still be a competitive team down the stretch.
A playoff berth is a long shot but not entirely out of the question. The Tigers are five games back in the AL Central and only two out in the Wild Card race, though they’d need to jump five teams. They’re playing a big series against one of those clubs in Seattle this week. They’ll play a winnable series in San Francisco and then face the division’s two best teams, the Guardians and White Sox, next week.
