It looks like we may finally be coming to the end of a telenovela no one in San Diego wanted, and with a plot twist no one expected: Chucky Lozano going to LA.
Various outlets are reporting that the 31-year-old forward, who hasn’t seen action for San Diego FC since last season’s Western Conference final, will be moved to be a designated player for the LA Galaxy, perhaps by the end of the week.
Under the terms of the potential deal, San Diego would grant permission for Lozano to negotiate with the Galaxy, but with SDFC still responsible for part of his salary.
“Lozano is someone that, again, we’re trying to work with, and his representatives. Still nothing has changed from our side, he’s still not training with the group,” said San Diego FC sporting director and general manager Tyler Heaps.
Lozano has a guaranteed salary of $9.33 million for 2026, making him the fourth highest paid player in MLS. He signed a four-year contract through the 2028 season as the club’s first designated player in June 2024.
San Diego FC signed Tunisian international winger Elias Achouri through June 2029 as the club’s third designated player. That signing fueled rumors that Lozano would be on the move sooner rather than later, particularly because of the notoriety that Achouri garnered playing in all of the Tunisian national team matches during this year’s World Cup.
“A lot of it depends on him and his decision to play, if he wants to continue to play football,” Heaps added of Lozano. “There has been interest and we’re actively trying to pursue that interest when it comes up. It’s largely timing as all these deals are.”
Besides going to the LA Galaxy, there were rumors about Lozano landing back to Liga MX with CF Pachuca or Chivas de Guadalajara. Pachuca was his first professional club and he helped lead that team to the Liga MX championship in 2016 and the CONCACAF Champions League title in 2017. Lozano won the tournament’s Golden Boot and Best Young Player award.
Chivas de Guadalajara, known as “El Rebaño Sagrado,” is the most popular and beloved team in Mexico and requires all players to be Mexican citizens or of Mexican descent. Lozano is arguably the most popular player to ever represent the Mexican national team, alongside Chicharito Hernandez, which would have made that move a perfect match.
But if Los Angeles is where Lozano lands, SDFC won’t have seen the last of him. LA Galaxy and San Diego FC have two more meetings this season, first on Aug. 29 at Snapdragon Stadium, then on Oct. 17 at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.
ESPN Mexico first reported the talks between SDFC and LA Galaxy.
