Electro-pop trio ‘strikes’ back at the Music Box
Los Angeles-based electro pop trio, The Strike, comes to Music Box on Aug. 7. This is modern pop at its best. The band wears its influences on its sleeve, so fans of 1980’s new wave-oriented dance music in particular will love The Strike’s blend of atmospheric keyboards, anthemic choruses and beats. Songs such as “Edge of the World” sound like a cross between “Mirage” era Fleetwood Mac and The Police’s 1979 single, “Message In A Bottle,” while melancholy tunes like “I Wish That You Would” are earworms so catchy you’ll find yourself humming along to them by the second chorus. Expect the night’s biggest fan interaction to be for the romantic ballad, “Until the Lights Go Out,” a song whose coda is custom-made for a crowd sing-along and the communal waving of hands in the air.

An offshoot of beloved costumed garage rockers, The Creepy Creeps, in this guise, they offer up a nice blend of exotica, surf music and cocktail jazz that’s a great soundtrack to a night out. Beyond the masks and costumes, these five musicians can really play, with cool, vintage-sounding arrangements of their tunes. Creepxotica’s various record releases are all welcome additions to any music collection, but this is a band you definitely have to see live for full effect.

The 2026 summer Concert series at Point Loma Park wraps up on Aug. 7 with a double bill, featuring tribute bands Swift Nation and The Sabrina Show, performing the hits of Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter. This is a dream bill for fans of modern pop. Carpenter’s songs, such as “Espresso” are pop gems that will get the crowd riled up. Famed blues combo, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, return to The Belly Up Tavern on Aug. 9. Formed in 1974, the band is currently touring in support of their most recent album, “Struck Down.” The Fabulous Thunderbirds lineup has changed many times over the decades, but it still features singer Kim Wilson, and now includes guitarist Dean Shot, keyboardist Kevin Anker, bassist Steve Gomes and drummer Nico Leophonte. The new album’s songs, such as “That’s Cold,” are worthy additions to the band’s canon and great showcases for Shot’s guitar work, but the night’s biggest cheers will be for the group’s two 1986 hits, “Wrap It Up” and “Tuff Enough.”

Standley Park’s Summer Concerts series continues on Aug. 9 with a performance from classic rockers, The Stand Up Guys. Featuring a quartet of local cover band all-stars, including guitarists Mark Siers and Andy Tirpak, bassist Bob Wade and drummer Melvin Love, the group is basically a fun live jukebox, specializing in hits from the 1960s and 1970s. The band plays an excellent version of songs from the likes of Eagles, Stevie Wonder and Roy Orbison, making for a fun, family-friendly way to wrap up the weekend.

Iconic guitarist Kid Congo brings his group, the Pink Monkey Birds, to the Casbah on Aug. 9 for a special afternoon show. Best known for his work with such acclaimed groups as The Gun Club, The Cramps, and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, with the Pink Monkey Birds Powers continues to mix elements of primal R&B, punk, and reverb-drenched rock ‘n’ roll, for a modern take on vintage sounds. Recent single, “Sean DeLear,” shows that after almost five decades, Powers is still turning out great tunes. Fans will be happy to note that recent setlists have included songs from Powers’ stints with both The Cramps and The Gun Club. High octane rock trio, The Film Company, opens the show.

Currently on the road in advance of her upcoming, Jeff Berkley produced album, “Veteran’s Daughter,” singer-songwriter Ashley E. Norton plays at Humphreys Backstage Live on Aug. 10. Although her music is usually filed under Americana, Norton’s songs actually have a broader range, with plenty pop and rock in her tunes, and set lists that might include both country-based originals, a Simon & Garfunkel tune or a Led Zeppelin favorite. Norton tours the country with different musicians and combos, most often with Dolly’s Revenge, but here she’ll be in solo mode giving her fans a great opportunity to see her perform her heartfelt songs in a picturesque, intimate setting.

It’s been almost 50 years since the release of Thorogood’s debut album, but the group has lost none of its live power in the ensuing decades. They remain one of the best bar bands on the road today, with Thorogood and his group consistently delivering a high-energy set of hard rockin’ blues standards. Fans will be happy to note that the current tour is built around Thorogood’s best-known material, including his hit covers of the likes of Hank Williams “Move It On Over” and John Lee Hooker’s “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer,” and of course, “Bad To The Bone.”
