Cindy Kimball takes a psychological approach as the latest owner of the second-story salon space above the OB Noodle House.“I have used my psych degree more in the last six months than I have in 30 years,” quipped Vermont native Kimball, who owns Details Salon & Spa. Kimball is the latest business to occupy the busy retail spot over the past 34 years. When Kimball is not running day-to-day operations at Details, she is busy helping other local businesses as a volunteer on the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association. Kimball sits on the association’s Promotion Committee, which helps support local businesses and boost economic vitality in the beach community.Details Salon & Spa, under Kimball’s stewardship, is a full‑service salon and spa offering haircuts, coloring, extensions, balayage, microdermabrasion, Brazilian waxing, facials, sunless tanning and other beauty treatments. Details markets itself as the “go‑to destination” for hair and skin care in Ocean Beach.Kimball balances her role as founder of her wellness‑focused beauty business with her service on Ocean Beach MainStreet Association’s board. Her approach blends professional cosmetology with a deep interest in human behavior and self‑care, rooted in her psychology degree and formal cosmetology training. She transitioned from a corporate marketing career to launch her salon. “I was trying to move on and find other jobs,” said Kimball of her career transition. “It was a great change. I called it getting back to my roots.”Of her role with the Promotions Committee, Kimball said it involves handling all of the group’s apparel as well as assisting with staging events like the chili cookoff in June. She said her committee offers input on design while “really looking for ways to improve the community through events and promotion.” Added Kimball, “It’s been a really great way for me as a new business owner to know what’s going on in the community. It also gives me an opportunity to bring new ideas on how we can bring a better name to OB.”The salon’s clientele is both men and women, and the business and its hairstyling techniques cater to both. “We can do everything a barber shop does except for straight-edge razor,” Kimball said their niche offers an upscale barbershop experience. “We do hot towels and clients get head and neck massages with their shampoos,” she added.Details is a hybrid business, noted Kimball. “We’re a salon and a spa,” she said. “We do skin care. We offer facials. We do lashes. We do self-tanning spray tans. I have a couple of people interested in renting a room to do massage.”Concluded Kimball of her business: “We’re casual. We’re fun. We have our vibe; we’re upstairs, we get the nice coastal breeze. You can see the ocean.”Regarding Ocean Beach and its ‘60s vibe, Kimball relishes being a part of it. “The community embraces that, likes to keep the storefronts a certain way,” she said, adding customer service is always a key component at Details. “There’s always someone here,” she said. “There’s always someone to answer the phone, to greet you.”So far so good, said Kimball about how the community and staff have embraced each other. “When this place is buzzing, and everyone is chatting away, and clients are happy, and the girls are happy – that is what is fulfilling. Just being able to rebuild a brand, and keep a brand and a business, that’s been part of this community for so long.”
