ESPN and ABC will have a new rules analyst for its marquee games next season.
The network announced that ex-SEC ref and coordinator of officials Steve Shaw will step into that role. He’ll be on primetime ABC broadcasts along with Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit and Holly Rowe.
ESPN is also retaining rules analysts Matt Austin, Bill LeMonnier and Jerry McGinn, but Shaw will be called upon to explain officiating decisions in the sport’s most high-profile games.
Shaw spent 22 years as an on-field official, including 15 with the SEC. More recently, Shaw was the SEC’s coordinator of officials and later was named the national coordinator of officials for all of college football.
His career as an on-field official included working 2 BCS National Championship Games (2000 and 2005). He also refereed 4 SEC Championship Games during his officiating career.
Shaw joins a veteran crew in Fowler, Herbstreit and Rowe who each have upwards of 30 years of experience at ESPN.
The first primetime ABC game of the 2026 season will be Clemson vs. LSU on Sept. 5.
