Balloon release
News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski was at the scene as loved ones held a balloon release and prayer circle for 35-year-old Shakara Green near where she died early Sunday morning. Green was one of six people shot when someone leaned out of a car and fired into a large crowd near Clifford Avenue and North Street, police said. She died at the scene.
“She was a sweet, kind hearted, beautiful young lady,” Cookie Netta said. “And I just don’t understand why this happened the way it happened.”
Netta, a longtime family friend of Green, said police need to do better managing large crowds after hours.
“They need to do more better with RPD. Everybody hanging out after hours,” Netta said. “And it was like a hundred-something people out there. And I was like, it should have been, like the mayor said, like less than 10 people should be out in the crowd.”
Theresa Wilson, another family friend, said the community also has a part to play.
“Is this what Rochester’s all about?” Wilson said. “Do everybody get up and pack out of here and go? I mean, you don’t want to be scared, we just got to pray and continue to move forward…But I think that people should grow a conscience. When things like this happen it makes you think about your kids. I have a 36 year old. I have a 14 year old. It makes it you think about your kids, what’s safe and what’s nasty, what’s there to protect, is not there to protect.”
The connection to the other weekend shooting
Green’s death was one of two deadly shootings over the weekend. Late Friday night and into early Saturday morning, police were called to a large crowd of several hundred people near North Clinton and Morrill Street when several gunshots rang out. The shooting killed 14-year-old Zahnia Barr and gave three others non-life threatening gunshot wounds.
Jayda Griffin, Green’s cousin and Wilson’s daughter, was a classmate of Barr.
“This one time in school, I was going to get jumped,” Griffin said. “But she came, and she said they not going to jump me, and she was going to jump in for me. And I was just happy, and I was smiling, because I know she had my back. And I didn’t really know her like that.”
As balloons were released, Griffin said she thought of both her cousin and Barr.
“Turn yourself in,” Netta said. “Turn yourself in. Because what if this was your child or somebody like that in your family, got gunned down like that. For a senseless crime act like that.”
Mailman shooting and additional information
On Saturday around 2 p.m., a mailman was shot while in his postal truck near Canal and West Main streets. Police found him at the Cumberland Avenue Post Office, and he is expected to survive.
Rochester Police have not announced any arrests in either deadly shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
Grief and mental health counseling is available after the killing of Zahnia Barr at the David Gantt R-Center, where Mayor Evans said she was an active member. The next session is Wednesday from 2 to 6 p.m.
