But I still don’t feel that it’ll be that long.”

After triggering an opt-out in his minor league deal with the Phillies, Hernandez signed with the Dodgers in May and made 12 appearances, with an 8.15 ERA over 17 2/3 innings. Fourteen of Hernandez’s 16 earned runs allowed occurred over three disastrous games, overshadowing the much more solid work of his other nine outings. Los Angeles designated Hernandez and outrighted him at the start of July, and after accepting that outright assignment instead of free agency, he’ll get at least another cup of coffee in the majors as the Dodgers figure out their post-deadline pitching plans.
The new staff won’t include Mills or Sheehan, as the latter is headed to Triple-A after posting a 5.29 ERA over 20 starts and 95 1/3 innings this season. Sheehan at least covered some innings as the Dodgers dealt with multiple rotation injuries, but the results just weren’t there, and L.A. opted to keep Eric Lauer as a starter while Skubal will take Sheehan’s place. Kris Bubic was acquired from the Royals in another trade today, but the Dodgers’ plan is to use him as a reliever once Bubic returns from the 60-day IL.
Mills has been up and down from Triple-A a few times since his contract was first selected on May 10, with the righty posting a 5.68 ERA over 6 1/3 innings and six games. This sporadic usage marked Mills’ first taste of MLB action since 2022, with a Tommy John surgery largely responsible for that three-year hiatus from the Show. Mills doesn’t have a past outright or enough service time to reject an outright assignment, so he’ll be sent off the 40-man roster and back to Triple-A unless another team claims the 31-year-old off waivers.
