In yet another move to address their bullpen, the Pirates acquired right-handed reliever Lake Bachar from the Marlins before Monday’s trade deadline, per an announcement from Pittsburgh. The Marlins received three prospects – righty Brandan Bidois, infielder Hyun Seung Lee and outfielder Brian Sanchez – in return.
With the Pirates currently sitting at 56-57 and a manageable 3 1/2 games out of Wild Card position, general manager Ben Cherington made it a point to upgrade the team’s relief corps leading up to the deadline. Over the past couple of days, Cherington swung deals for Bachar, Luke Weaver, Kirby Yates and Camilo Doval in an effort to improve a bullpen that ranks 16th in the majors in K-BB percentage, 17th in fWAR and 22nd in ERA.
The Pirates may also soon welcome back an in-house reinforcement in lefty Evan Sisk, who has been on the injured list with elbow inflammation for a month. Sisk, perhaps the Pirates’ best reliever this year, is on a rehab assignment and working toward a return.
The Pirates are the third big league organization for the 31-year-old Bachar, whom the Padres drafted in the fifth round in 2016. Bachar never made it to the majors in San Diego, which designated him for assignment in September 2024. However, after the Marlins claimed Bachar, they turned him into an oft-used member of their bullpen. He will leave Miami with a 3.88 ERA over 139 innings and 101 appearances. Bachar has taken the ball 38 times this year and registered a 3.84 ERA over 58 2/3 innings. His 25.2% strikeout rate is solid, though his 8.7% walk rate and 38.6% ground-ball rate are below average.
Despite his age, Bachar still has another full season left before he will become eligible for arbitration. He also has two minor league options remaining, giving the Pirates flexibility to send him down if they want.
The 58-55 Marlins are higher in the NL standings than the Pirates and 1 1/2 back of a playoff spot, but they could not resist the Bucs’ offer for Bachar. Bidois, an Australia native, is the lone player the Marlins received who has experience in the majors. The 25-year-old debuted with the Pirates this year and limped to a 6.32 ERA in 15 innings. He logged a bloated 15% walk rate, which did not come close to offsetting a solid 25% strikeout rate, and also had difficulty keeping the ball in the park. Thanks in part to a paltry 23.9% ground-ball rate, Bidois yielded five home runs in a small sample of work.
Despite boasting a 96 mph fastball and a power slider, Bidois has also struggled at the Triple-A level this year. An even worse walk rate (17.5%) has helped lead to a brutal 8.10 ERA in 20 innings. However, Bidois is only year removed from an incredible minor league showing across four different levels. In 61 innings, including 13 shutout frames in Triple-A, he posted a microscopic 0.74 ERA with a 30% K rate and an 11.7% BB rate. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen ranked the 25-year-old as the Pirates’ 27th-best prospect in June, writing that Bidois has the stuff to turn into an “on-roster reliever rather than an up/down guy.” That won’t happen in Pittsburgh, but it could in Miami.
Lee, 18, signed with the Pirates as an international free agent from Korea last year. Despite a strong 15% walk rate, Lee has not hit well this season in 15 games in Single-A, where he has batted .157/.283/.235 with a home run and a 38.3% strikeout rate in 60 trips to the plate. But he has slashed a much better 309/.396/.569 with six homers and three steals in 144 plate appearances in the Florida Complex League. Longenhagen ranked Lee 48th in the Pirates’ system.
Sanchez, a native of Venezuela, signed with the Brewers in 2023. They traded him to the Yankees in a deal for Jake Bauers later in the year. He also didn’t last long with the Yankees, who dealt him to the Pirates in last summer’s David Bednar trade. The 22-year-old Sanchez debuted at the High-A level this season and has hit .254/.340/.431 nine homers, nine steals, a 25.1% K rate and a 10.4% walk rate in 327 plate appearances.
