The Pirates announced that right-hander Mitch Keller has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to a right arm teres major muscle injury. He won’t be eligible to return during the remainder of the regular season. Left-hander Brandon Eisert has been recalled to take his place on the active roster.
It’s a blow to the Pittsburgh rotation just ahead of the stretch run. Keller wasn’t having his best season, with a 5.29 earned run average over 22 starts, but his underlying numbers suggested positive regression may have been coming. His 64.4% strand rate was quite low and perhaps contributing to pushing more runs across the board. His 4.54 FIP and 4.72 SIERA suggested he could have fared better with more neutral luck.
Some of the struggles were deserved, however. Keller’s 17.7% strikeout rate this year was a notable drop from last year’s 20% clip. His walk rate climbed from 6.8% to 8.3% and his ground ball rate dropped from 43.6% to 37.3%. Though Keller wasn’t in top form, the Bucs probably don’t want to be losing him for the final two months of the season. This is a guy who had a solid 4.15 ERA in 707 2/3 innings from 2022 to 2025.
The Pirates are 3.5 games back of a playoff spot and trying to make a push. They had an aggressive deadline, adding Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval, Kirby Yates and Lake Bachar to their bullpen. As they try to make up ground in the postseason race, they will proceed with Paul Skenes, Braxton Ashcraft, Jared Jones and Bubba Chandler in four rotation spots.
To replace Keller, perhaps Carmen Mlodzinski will get stretched out again. He had some solid results earlier this year but got moved to the bullpen when Jones came off the IL, which seemingly led to some drama between him and the club. Wilber Dotel, Hunter Barco and Antwone Kelly are also options for some bulk work.
