In 1969, Dolly was riding Porter Wagoner's tour bus. Wagoner was famous across Nashville for his rhinestone-clad Nudie suits, handcrafted by designer Nudie Cohn, who also designed rhinestone costumes for Elvis Presley and Hank Williams.A song came to her, and she needed paper. The only paper available was a dry-cleaning receipt from one of his designer suits. She grabbed it and started writing.

Wagoner loved what she'd written so much he had the receipt framed. It now hangs in Dolly's Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood alongside a duplicate of the coat her mother made and the original handwritten lyrics.
The song's a story song, which is Dolly's own description of her favorite way to write. What it tells on the surface is this. One winter Dolly needed a coat. Her mother was given a box of rags and sewed them into a patchwork coat, telling Dolly the Bible story of Joseph as she worked.

The photograph on the album cover was taken the same day. It was picture day at school. When the photographer took her picture, she was crying. She smiled anyway because she wanted her picture made so badly. She was still wearing the coat.
Dolly started writing songs at five. Her father recalled she was writing them before she knew how to hold a pencil. More than 3,000 have followed. She writes them to keep memories alive. "Love and my family and writing about those days keeps me sane in an insane world." Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years, died in March 2025.
