This week’s Hometown Hero, presented by the O. Max Gardner Foundation, is Emily Sutton.
Sutton is the executive director and river keeper of the Haw River Assembly, a nonprofit whose mission is to restore and protect the Haw River, Jordan Lake, and the entire watershed around it. Their work includes conservation, environmental advocacy, fighting pollution, and teaching people how to be effective stewards of the ecosystem themselves. The work is vital all the time in a watershed that covers 8 different counties, but the Haw River Assembly was never more important than in the immediate aftermath of Tropical Storm Chantal last year. Even after her own home was affected by the flooding, Sutton worked tirelessly in the days, weeks, and moths after the storm to lead a heroic team that responded to the storm in many different ways, including water testing. The assembly also took steps in the aftermath to restore natural wetlands to mitigate the devastating impacts of flooding in the future.
