It is gaining battlefield insights into the fast-evolving nature of warfare on land, sea and air while preparing to grab Taiwan and rapidly building up its armed forces.
The Economist reports that Chinese troops receive drone and urban warfare training in Russia. Leaked documents in two European newspapers claim China and Russia have even discussed plans to disable Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite network while exchanging artificial intelligence for battlefield data.
Now look at events in the Middle East, another military frontline in this global tussle. The battleground is Iran, a key player in the ugly alliance of autocrats that helped Russia build many of the drones attacking Ukraine. Once again, China lurks in the background, supplying satellite imaging, intelligence and dual use substances such as rocket propellants to help the thugs running this hideous Islamic theocracy resist Trump’s idiotic attack, launched with Israel. Saudi Arabia last week joined the US in strikes against “Iran-aligned terrorists” in Iraq after Tehran attacked American bases. Now reports suggest that Beijing’s support for Iran is becoming more blatant, sending a shipment of mobile air defence missile launchers to help the regime even as the White House seeks a way out of its self-inflicted quagmire.
You can see many ripples from this conflict between democracy and dictatorship around the planet. Russia, for instance, is taking advantage of African instability from Mali to Madagascar with its mercenaries and misinformation. Meanwhile, the world’s most powerful nation is led by a man who assails democracy at home while sucking up to despots abroad.
Questioned about Russia giving Iran intelligence to hit US bases, Trump replied: “I’ll ask Putin about it.” Asked about China sending missiles, he said President Xi Jinping “told me very strongly he wouldn’t partake and he knows I’d be quite disappointed”. His pathetic stance towards these dictators as they help kill his country’s troops is a betrayal of both his own nation and democracy. “I think I trust them,” he says blithely.
Britain and much of Europe still stands behind Ukraine’s heroic defence of freedom, but displays similar naivety towards the regime at the helm of the alliance of dictators. So despite spying and intelligence threats, our government kowtows to Beijing by letting it build a mega-embassy in London above critical cables for our financial and internet networks.
Even as missiles filled with Chinese parts were fired at Kyiv last week, an attempt to stop this crazy idea was rejected by the high court. Objectors included Chloe Cheung, a Hong Kong pro-democracy activist with a bounty placed on her head by Beijing. “As someone targeted by the Chinese Communist Party, I know why it’s important that Britain protects itself from foreign intimidation,” she said. Some fellow activists living here have been silenced by threats of retaliation.
It took too long for most Westerners to see the scale of threat from Russia as Putin sought to salvage Soviet hegemony, despite attacks on places such as Georgia and Ukraine trying to shake off their shackles of imperialism. Now, the West should remove the blinkers over Beijing as it seeks to exploit America’s weakness. “It’s the arsenal of the authoritarian world,” said one intelligence source in Kyiv.
Perhaps we should reflect more on the work of historian Richard Overy, who argues the Second World War really dates back to 1931 when Japan attacked China rather than Germany’s 1939 invasion of Poland. He suggests shifting global dynamics sparked a decade and half of conflict, a geopolitical crisis embracing conflicts in Asia, Africa and Europe that seemed separate but was a reshaping of world order.
