MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — The 5th Annual Seize the Day: Amer’s Epilepsy Trail Run took place on Sunday morning, located at Mendon Ponds Park. The fundraiser featured timed 5K and 10K trail races, along with a “One-Mile Fun Run/Walk” for all ages.
Proceeds went to Empowering People’s Independence (EPI) and its epilepsy programs, which provide advocacy, support, and education for people and families in Upstate and Central New York. Camp EAGR and Camp Coast, the only overnight camps for youth who have epilepsy, were also supported at the fundraiser.
Sunday’s run raised about $40,000. Over the past five years, almost $250,000 has been raised by the annual event.
“Epilepsy is still quite isolating and stigmatized, and a lot of people don’t talk about it even though it’s way more common, so having a space where it’s safe to be like I have epilepsy or I’ve had seizures is really important, and this event helps build that community,” said Sarah Korba, associate director of epilepsy services
EPI aims to help teach people what to do if someone has a seizure.
