One of the marquee swimmers for the upcoming European Championships, France’s Leon Marchand, may not race one of his signature events, the 400 IM, due to a reinjured hip adductor sustained during a French training camp in Vichy.
Marchand withdrew from the final of the 200 breaststroke at the French National Championships in late June after feeling pain in his hip abductor in the prelims of the event. That pain led him to withdraw from the rest of those championships.
In a report from L’Equipe, Marchand will still race at the European Championships, though the injury may affect which races he will be swimming.
When asked about his injury, Marchand told L’Equipe that he has had a “rough time” despite making good progress on his recovery.
“I’ve had a bit of a rough time, to be honest. I made good progress in the first few weeks, and after three weeks, I started swimming breaststroke again.” Marchand said. “We consulted with the doctor; we were pushing the limits a bit because we didn’t want to waste too much time, but we also wanted to do things properly. And I slightly re-injured myself three weeks after the French Championships, in the same spot, my pectineus. So it wasn’t strong enough yet to do a breaststroke set. I started again, not completely from scratch, but almost. I continued my rehab, but I still haven’t started swimming breaststroke again.”
Marchand mentioned that he has already “ruled out” the 200 breast at the upcoming European Championships, and that he feels uncertain if he will race the 400 IM, an event in which he is the fastest performer in history (4:02.50), and in which it falls on the first day of the meet. This uncertainty potentially negates the goal that Marchand set back in April, when he shared that he would be looking to take down his own World Record in the event at these championships.
“I’m supposed to start training again on Monday. And I’m really apprehensive. I’ve ruled out the 200m breaststroke at the European Championships, and the 400m individual medley is uncertain because it’s the first day. I’m a bit afraid of re-injuring my adductor and having my week ruined.” Marchand said in the report from L’Equipe. It’s very frustrating because it’s a race I really wanted to do well in this year. I’ll see how I feel with the kick. I’ll wait for the MRI results too. But the decision will be based more on the clinical assessment and how I feel. I’m giving myself until the day before the competition to decide.”
Marchand admitted that he had considered skipping this meet in its entirety at various times throughout this injury process. However, this meet will offer a chance for Marchand to focus on the butterfly and freestyle events.
“I’ve still learned some things from this injury, because I’ve been able to focus on freestyle, butterfly, and also on aspects I was neglecting a bit, like rehabilitation, injury prevention, and a warm-up more suited to what I do in the water. When I re-injured myself, I couldn’t do the dolphin kick anymore. That was the difficult part because I rely on it a lot. But I’ve been able to try to generate speed in freestyle and butterfly without necessarily using long underwater phases.” Marchand told L’Equipe. “Knowing I’ll finally be able to swim freestyle the way I want. My preparation wasn’t great, but I can take that as a starting point. I’ve never competed in any major freestyle competitions. I’m eager to see how it goes.”
