ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Plentiful moisture converging ahead of a slow moving front will result in multiple bouts of heavy rain and thunder in parts of WNY today. We have a Yellow Alert up for Orleans, Genesee, and Monroe County as these areas are at the greatest risk for flash flooding. Although it won’t be raining ALL day, the timing window for heavy rain will be from late this morning through late tonight. Rain amounts will range from a few tenths to half an inch near the Finger Lakes, to 1-2″ near Rochester and westward, with some pockets within that possibly reaching or exceeding 3″. This will depend on where exactly the heaviest and most persistent showers and storms roll through.
Flash flooding happens quickly, hence the name. Be careful near creeks streams, and rivers, as well as other low lying flood-prone locations. Poor drainage and urban areas may flood as well. If you are out driving and see a flooded road, don’t risk driving through it as the water is always deeper than it looks. Showers and storms will slowly pass to the east overnight.
We’ll be back to Green on the Threat Tracker tomorrow as the front finally passes through. There may still be a stray shower in the morning, but otherwise we’ll start mostly cloudy with clearing skies in the afternoon. Humidity will be back to comfortable levels, and highs will be in the mid 70s.
