CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. — The Ontario County Historical Society and the Farmington Quaker Museum co-sponsored an event commemorating Emancipation Day. The day marks when slavery ended in the British Empire.
“Most Americans that when we think of emancipation day, think of the speech that President Lincoln gave in 1862 and 63, that the Emancipation Proclamation took place, or took effect on January 1st, 1863. But there had been celebrations of emancipation elsewhere in the English-speaking world for a good half a century,” said Preston Pierce, a historian.
Historians gathered at Austin Steward’s gravesite. Steward escaped slavery and lived freely in Western New York, later becoming a prominent businessman, abolitionist and author.
