ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We are expecting thunderstorms that may bring the potential for heavy and persistent rain, especially for folks in Rochester and further west and north (north and western Monroe County, Orleans County, Genesee County). Therefore, a Yellow Alert is up for Sunday highlighting the above areas. All of western New York will see periods of thunderstorms and rain, however, the aforementioned areas have the highest probability of seeing the heaviest and most persistent rainbands.
For Saturday evening, weather will stay quiet with an increasingly cloudy sky, light winds, and temperatures dropping into the upper 70s. Later Saturday evening, rain and thunder chances increase through the overnight hours. As a result of abundant moisture and overcast skies, temperatures will stay close to 70 degrees overnight. Winds stay mainly out of the south between 5 and 10 mph overnight, however, winds will increase through Sunday morning. Sunday’s winds will stay out of the south/southeast but will increase to sustained speeds between 10 to 20 mph with possible wind gusts up to 30 mph, especially south of Rochester into the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. Dew points will also stay in the mid-60s Saturday night and increase into the low-70s through Sunday, feeling very humid through the next 24 hours.
For Sunday’s Yellow Alert, most of Western New York will see scattered showers and storms throughout the day, starting in the morning hours. The highest probability of flooding exists from Rochester then further north and west (western and northern Monroe County, Orleans and Genesee Counties). Why do we see the biggest flood threat in these areas? Strong mid and upper level winds will direct a persistent band of moisture and heat out of the southwest, up the Ohio Valley and into the westernmost portion of the area. Therefore, this area will likely see the most rain. There is an additional, lesser threat for damaging wind gusts. However, this particular threat is expected to stay in the southwestern corner of the Southern Tier (Cattaraugus, Allegany, Chautauqua and southern Erie Counties). Sunday will likely be a day for indoor activities as unsettled weather sticks around through the day. High temperatures will likely sit in the upper-70s from overcast skies.
