A couple who stole people’s personal checks in the mail in Pacific Beach and elsewhere have been sentenced to several years in federal prison and were ordered to pay $74,808 to more than 10 victims.
David Anthony Burge, 34, was sentenced to four years in prison while his wife, Kyrsten Renee Bospflug, 36, was given 37 months in prison by U.S. District Court Judge Barry Ted Moskowitz on July 20.
Their terms are to run consecutive to state court sentences for a similar scheme, according to court records. They received credits for serving 378 days in jail since their arrests on July 8, 2025.
The list of victims in federal court records include American Express, several out of state banks, Navy Federal Credit Union and J.P. Morgan Chase.
The U.S. Attorney’s office described the couple as “partners in crime, using stolen U.S. Postal Service keys manufactured by Burge to access and steal mail.”
There were apartment complexes where mail was stolen from including Pacific Beach Drive, and Riviera Drive. Other addresses where mail was stolen were in North Park and downtown.
They altered stolen checks they found in the mail so they could cash them. The couple exchanged text messages with each other describing what they found in the stolen mail.
The U.S. Attorney’s office said Burge presented himself to at least three different banks while posing as one of his victims, using the victim’s actual birth date, Social Security numbers, and credit and debit card account numbers.
