The Woman in the Wall cast: Meet the characters in BBC drama ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

The series, from Joe Murtagh (Say Nothing), is inspired by the harrowing real-life history of Ireland's Magdalene laundries, which saw thousands of "fallen women" forced to live and work in abhorrent conditions.

After being introduced to the subject by 2002 drama The Magdalene Sisters, Murtagh said he was "horrified" by the reality of these institutions – which were finally shut down between 1996-98 – and how few people were aware they existed in the first place.

Murtagh continued: "But the thing that was more horrifying was realising that I hadn't known about this, and every single person that I mentioned this to had never heard of this, and that's still true today outside of Ireland."

Ruth Wilson leads The Woman in the Wall cast as Lorna Brady, who wakes one morning to find a dead body in her house, with Detective Colman Akande (Daryl McCormack) working to piece together how the shocking scene came to be.
