Steve Maynor was officially sworn in as the new Chatham County Sheriff during a ceremony at the Agriculture & Conference Center in Pittsboro Thursday.
Maynor, who has served in the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office for more than two decades, took the oath before a large crowd that included his family, colleagues and outgoing sheriff Mike Roberson. Deputies, detention officers and civilian employees also took oaths of office during the ceremony, which was administered with the help of North Carolina House Minority Leader and District 54 Rep. Robert Reives.
“It’s an incredible honor, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside each and every one of you as we continue to serve Chatham County,” Maynor told the crowd. “Tonight is certainly special for me and my family. But it is not about one person. It’s not about me. It’s about the team of men and women serving this county and taking your oaths tonight, our relationships with our families, with each other, with our law enforcement partners, and the citizens who place their trust in us every day. Together we will continue building on the strong foundation that’s already been laid, moving this sheriff’s office forward together.”
During his time with the sheriff’s office, Maynor has served as captain of Special Operations, overseeing court services, narcotics, community services and Student Resource Officers. He was appointed chief deputy in March 2023.
Roberson, who had served as Chatham County Sheriff since 2016, set the groundwork for his departure from the office when he announced in December 2025 that he would be seeking a seat on the county’s Board of Commissioners. He endorsed Maynor as his potential successor in the same announcement, calling him “an essential part of our leadership team.”
Roberson then won the Chatham County District 3 Democratic primary the following March and was appointed to the Board for an abbreviated term July 16, replacing the resigning David Delaney. Roberson formally retired from the sheriff’s office on July 15 following a similar office-wide ceremony to Maynor’s swearing-in event. Roberson is unopposed in November’s general election for the county commissioner seat, so he is poised to serve a four-year term.
Maynor will also be in this fall’s general election as the Democratic nominee for the next full term as Chatham County Sheriff. He will face Republican Marcus Globuschutz, with independent candidate Bruce Coble also working to earn a spot on the ballot as a third-party candidate.
“We will enforce the law fairly,” Maynor said in his speech. “We’ll protect the constitutional rights of every person. We will use our training, our judgment, our compassion and our professionalism every single day.
“We don’t change a community overnight,” he added. “We change it with one conversation, one act of kindness, one encounter at a time. We don’t build trust in one day. We teach, we encourage, we learn and we grow. And we keep showing up, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do.”
