Why Caleb Williams Thinks Colston Loveland Can Be NFL’s Best Tight End

ESPN’s projections predict Colston Loveland will be tied for the team’s lead in targets and haul in the most receptions in 2026. Based on last year’s production and the blossoming relationship with quarterback Caleb Williams, I can see why. The upcoming forecast for Loveland is among the reasons the talented tight end ranked sixth on the list of the most important Bears players, compiled and shared by colleague Patrick Flowers this week.

I was already high on Loveland going into this year based on everything I saw last season and what projections indicate for the future. And then I saw this post from Bear Report’s Zack Pearson:

But on the other hand, I do believe there are things you can draw from when people on the beat share anecdotes from practice. And my big takeaway from the tweet above is that Colston Loveland will be a problem for opposing defenses.

Granted, this isn’t an earth-shattering take. Many others believe big things are on the horizon for Loveland, so this isn’t a particularly unique thought. But for me, it goes beyond the big stats that pop from game day. There is an obvious focus on Colston Loveland and the numbers he can put up in catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns. But that is just part of what makes him dangerous.

2026 CHICAGO BEARS TIGHT ENDS PREVIEW

Defenses will have their hands full trying to slow Loveland down as a pass catcher. And yet, even if they do that, it’s not as if he becomes a non-factor. Loveland’s 70.0 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus was the 12th-best among the 83 tight ends who played enough snaps on the leaderboard. Throw in that he can line up everywhere (461 snaps as an in-line tight end, 181 in the slot, 143 out wide, 31 in the backfield) in a formation, and it is the type of wrinkle that complicates things for defenses at another level.

The Bears are 44 days away from kicking off their regular-season slate of games against the Carolina Panthers. And if I had to rank the players I was looking forward to seeing the most, Colston Loveland would be at the top of that tier right below quarterback Caleb Williams. It feels like the sky is the limit for Chicago’s top tight end, who could very well be the NFL’s best by year’s end if things go to plan.
