LOMPOC, Calif. (KEYT) - Vandenberg Space Force Base held a formal appointment ceremony for a new squadron commander this morning.
Colonel Kyle Rowland accepted command of the reactivated 4th SLS.
First activated in 1994 for launching Titan IV rockets and directing Delta IV and Atlas V missions, the squadron was deactivated in 2018.
This morning at what they call the Boathouse, formerly the Coast Guard rescue station, Colonel James T Horne III reactivated the 4th Space Launch Squadron and passed the flag, formally appointing Colonel Rowland commander.
This is one of the steps toward Vandenberg‘s long-term visions as it propels itself into the space age.
This new iteration of the 4th Space Launch Squadron will be in charge of Range Management, and eventually the base’s Spaceport of the Future itself.
Colonel Horne spoke highly of Colonel Rowland and challenged him to pursue the base’s vision with vigor.
Colonel Rowland’s enthusiasm for his new position conveyed clearly as he accepted his new command.
Colonel Rowland says he looks forward to taking the lead for the future of the base, surrounding communities, and the country as a whole.
