PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) – Ed Oliver and year eight doesn’t even seem real but such is the case for the longtime Buffalo Bills star defensive tackle.
Oliver was drafted in the first round in 2019 and is now one of the longest tenured players on Buffalo. On the defensive side, he brings the most experience in a Bills uniform.
But Oliver is still only 28 years young, doesn’t turn 29 until December, and the Bills coaching staff thinks they can get even more out of the veteran.
“I think number one is you gotta make teams find him,” said defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. “If you know where a guy’s going to be it’s a little easier for an offense to gameplan.
Of course, Leonhard is referring to moving Oliver around on defense to try and take away the amount of double teams he faces.
“Ed, as a one-on-one guy is tough,” said General Manager Brandon Beane.
Another way the Bills can free up Oliver is by utilizing the experience around him. Greg Rousseau has played five seasons alongside Oliver, and utilizing that connection could be a big way to exploit opposing offensive lines.
“The more experience you have around a guy like Ed, it frees him up and it allows him to kind of be the key piece of it,” said Leonhard.
Oliver has accounted for 30 sacks in his Buffalo Bills career, which isn’t shabby for a defensive tackle. Clearly, Leonhard thinks he can design the right defense to give him a career year.
