Oooh, it’s gonna be a good weekend. First, Tigers starter (and potential Cubs trade target) Casey Mize was scratched from his start tonight. And now, Mets starter (and potential Cubs trade target) Freddy Peralta gets the same treatment.
Like Mize (with his injuries and rental status), Peralta (with his ineffectiveness and rental status) is an imperfect fit for the Chicago Cubs this season … But he is fit nonetheless. He also comes with the prior Craig Counsell connection and years of dominance in the NL Central.
Indeed, before he fell apart this year, he seemed like a borderline obvious trade and free agent candidate for the Chicago Cubs. But circumstances have changed.
That said, the Cubs and Mets have already gotten together on a rental starter trade earlier this season for David Peterson, proving the theory that certain pitchers can perform better in the Cubs organization (i.e., in front of the Cubs’ dominant defense).
But, yeah, it has been a brutal season for Peralta, likely costing him TENS of millions of dollars in free agency this winter.
Imagine, for a second, he hit free agency after last season. He’d be coming off a 33-start season with a 2.70 ERA and a career 3.59 ERA. He’d have been PAAAAAID.
Instead, he’s about to hit free agency with a 4.99 ERA this year over 22 starts (so far). There’s time for him to turn it around, but he might already be destined for the one-year “prove-it” deal to reclaim some of that value. Being traded (and therefore decoupled from potential draft pick compensation) doesn’t hurt, though.
Then again, who knows … maybe he’ll go to a new team, dominate the rest of the way and into the postseason, and all will be forgotten. Or, at least, blamed on the Mets.
Either way, his scratch tonight all but confirms it. Peralta is absolutely getting traded in the next few days.

In fact, I wouldn’t even be surprised if a Peralta deal comes together sooner than later (albeit not for the Mets’ ridiculously over-the-top rumored asking price). Why? Because the Mets also have rental starter Clay Holmes on the market, a much better fit for the Cubs, by the way, and when that happens, teams like to move one guy sooner to clear the way for the other guy later. That’s just … what happens.
So, yeah, I’d be on the lookout for some Freddy Peralta trade news. And once again I repeat: it’s going to be an awesome weekend.
