For young African footballers dreaming of building a career in the sport, the most well-trodden paths go north to Europe.
That’s where most of the money and opportunities are, while there are already numerous well-established routes via specific clubs and specialist academies.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Leganés, especially considering Diomande had actually been criticised for a miss at Sevilla that would’ve earned a 3-2 win instead of a 2-2 draw and ultimately been enough to see them swap positions in the final table.
In second-half stoppage time, Diomande raced onto a punt from his goalkeeper after a corner. He beat everyone to it, nudged the ball past Sevilla keeper Ørjan Nyland – who’d come way out of his box – and had effectively an open net to score into from 35 yards. Perhaps distracted by one defender between him and the goal, Diomande’s effort was tame and went well wide.
Jiménez maintained the chance wouldn’t have even come about were it anyone else chasing the punt, so there was no blame apportioned to Diomande from his perspective. But it was illustrative of a weakness in his game when it came to finishing. His shot selection, decision making and technique all clearly still required honing – though this was nothing out of the ordinary for an 18-year-old.
Regardless, RB Leipzig were convinced.
Jiménez claimed several clubs called about Diomande but were put off by his €20m release clause; the coach told them he’d be worth “double or triple that” in one or two years. Leipzig were the ones to make the gamble.
Storming the Bundesliga, Entering the Stratosphere
Diomande’s one season in the Bundesliga was electric, earning him the Rookie of the Season award for his dazzling performances. The headline numbers would be his 12 goals and eight assists, with Yamal (27 – G16, A11) the only other player under the age of 24 to tally at least 20 goal involvements across the top five European leagues last term.
While these figures obviously reflect Diomande’s high quality, it feels a little reductive to boil his game down to just goal involvements.
As with at Leganés, Diomande’s dynamism, trickery and bravery made him such an asset. He could singlehandedly dig his team out of trouble or create danger for the opposition – the difference was he’d continued to grow, so his all-round end product was improved, and he was surrounded by better teammates.
When it came to his positivity and daring on the ball, he arguably doubled down from his short spell in Spain. His dribble attempts went up to 7.7 per 90, the most of anyone (900+ mins) in the Bundesliga – and his 55.4% completion rate was the fourth highest among the 68 players to average at least 2.0 dribbles per 90.
The beauty of Diomande’s talent on the ball, however, lies in the fact he is strong on either foot, and a menace in both tight spaces and over longer distances. He could be an asset for a transition team or a possession-dominant side camped outside the opposition’s penalty area.
