For anyone heading to Lollapalooza this weekend, the Drug Enforcement Administration is warning not to take any pills not prescribed by a doctor.
“This isn’t Bikini Bottom. The danger is real,” the DEA wrote on X, along with a picture of a pill showing the character SpongeBob.
The agency warned that some MDMA pills sold as ecstasy or molly, even cartoon-themed pills, are actually “pure meth.”
“You’ll see cartoon characters imprinted on some of these pills. That’s often an appeal to the younger consumer base, the kind of younger base that we will see this weekend at Grant Park in downtown Chicago,” said Luis Agostini, the public information officer for the DEA Chicago Field Division.
The Chicago field division also shared photos of a makeshift meth pill pressing operation that agents uncovered in Indiana this year. Agents worry meth will make its way into the Lollapalooza crowds.
“What we’re concerned about is festival and concertgoers who might be seeking to enhance their concert and Lolla experience,” Agostini said.
For any parents sending their kids downtown to Lollapalooza, the Agostini said have a strategy in place and a safe place where they can go if they feel unsafe or they’re facing peer pressure.
A festival spokesperson said in a statement, “Lollapalooza takes a proactive, comprehensive approach to patron health and safety. Our onsite medical operation is designed to treat minor injuries as well as responding to medical emergencies that require ambulance transport. Our medical teams include physicians, nurses, and paramedics stationed in six medical tents positioned throughout the festival, along with SafeFest teams that actively patrol the grounds to identify and assist patrons who may need help.”
The festival will also have water, Naloxone (Narcan) and cooling areas available.
“We do see toxicological related concerns and a lot of heat-related illness, as well. Some dehydration, sunburns. People are out for long hours of the day,” said Dr. Kelly Williamson, an emergency medicine physician at Northwestern.
Williamson said the medical tents do make a big difference.
“We are so fortunate in the city of Chicago to have amazing EMTs and paramedics staffing these events and providing a lot of the care that people need just right on scene and preventing transfers to the hospital,” Williamson said.
City data backs that up. For example, there were 234 ambulance transports in 2017 and only 42 last year.
