PITTSFORD, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills kicked off training camp at Saint John Fisher University under rainy skies, and the team says that’s exactly what they wanted.
When rain and football are th that meant one thing: football weather.
“I was telling someone earlier, when we were in Spartanburg all those years, guys were praying for days like this,” joked General Manager Brandon Beane, who worked for the Carolina Panthers when they held camp in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Maybe the concept of “football weather” is a bit blown out of proportion–I mean, who actually likes playing in the rain? Apparently Joe Brady does.
“Who says it’s a crappy day, right? Like, it’s football. There’s there’s never a bad day to play football, right? Is it crappy when it snows? Right. We play in Buffalo, right? It rains, it snows. Like we don’t care,” Joe Brady said.
For Brady in his first year as head coach, the rain is a good thing as he tries to pare his team from 91 active players down to 53 by the beginning of September.
“If it’s raining, cool. Let’s go. Let’s see who can respond and who can go through the good and the bad. And who mentally is like, the weather got to me and, hey, there’s going to be a bad play. Can you put the ball down and go do it again? So I think it’s perfect,” Brady said.
That was the tone of Brady’s first day at camp: putting the ball down and going.
“So I think it’s just a mentality and an approach to like, let’s wake up, put the ball down, let’s go,” Brady said.
Brady has been with the Bills since 2022, of course, this is his first year in charge. Often a new head coach gets some grace, some time to figure things out. This offensive coordinator turned head coach doesn’t want any of that.
“I said that on my first press conference. Like I understand what comes with this job, but, that’s what I wanted, right? Like, I want the guys to understand that that comes with it. I have no pressure. I don’t feel any pressure and it’s not in a negative way,” Brady said. “But, I wake up, I work, I try to do the best job, the best I can do and get my guys and put them in the best position of success and let it go from there. But, yeah, I don’t think we’re wired in a way to be like, you know what? We have a grace period. Whether we do or we we don’t.”
Training camp continues at Saint John Fisher University on Thursday at 8:30 am.
