However, King Kyle wasn’t alone at the wall for gold in a time of 22.73 this evening.
Teammate Ben Armbruster also threw down his best, tying Chalmers in the same mark of 22.73 to share record-setting honors.
Remarkably, both men are involved in yet another tie, hitting the same Aussie and Oceanian record of 22.73 Matt Targett put on the books at the supersuited 2009 World Championships.
Cameron McEvoy, the reigning World Record holder and Olympic champion in the 50m freestyle, as well as the gold medalist in the event here in Glasgow, rounded out tonight’s 50m fly podium in 22.92.
Entering this competition, Chalmers’ lifetime best checked in at the 22.77 he produced at this year’s Australian Open to become the nation’s #2 performer of all time. Armbruster’s PB rested at the 22.90 also logged at the Trials to rank 3rd among the all-time Australian performers. McEvoy’s time of 22.92 from Trials, which he posted again tonight, rendered him the 4th-quickest Aussie ever.
As mentioned, last night Chalmers settled for the bronze in the 100m free in 47.74, while countryman and fellow Olympic relay medalist Flynn Southam grabbed the gold in 47.13, followed by Welsh Olympic medalist Matt Richards‘ silver medal-earning outing of 47.64. That race represented the first time new father Chalmers has been beaten by an Australian in the 100m free in about a decade.
Chalmers and Armbruster now rank 4th in the world on the season, alongside Swiss Olympic medalist Noe Ponti.

Post-race he told The Guardian, “I would love to get to that point [in 2028], but I’m also a realist and know that what is important to me now is my wife and daughter. And I really feel that I’ve won in life by having them, that if I don’t get to that point, I’m not going to be disappointed.
“I have to be a realist at this point in my career, too. I’m not an 18-year-old kid that’s coming on, that’s got no other things going on in life.
“I don’t want to be a selfish parent. I want to be there for her and work out what is the best possible thing. And I don’t mean that in any other way. I desperately want to be in LA, but you have to work that out being a parent.”
