Cooper finished 8th in the men’s 100 backstroke prelims, stopping the clock in 54.58 to sit five-tenths ahead of Bermuda’s Jack Harvey, who finished 9th in 55.04.
He pulled out of the final, as did Harvey. This moved Scotland’s Jamie Ferguson into the 8th seeded position after he originally finished 10th in the semifinal at 55.29.
Cooper swam the prelims of the men’s 400 medley relay for Australia, splitting 55.00 to help the Australians qualify 1st overall.
The other scratch came in the men’s 1500 freestyle from Scotland’s Sean McCann. He has been up and down in Glasgow, finishing 8th in the 400 freestyle final after swimming 3:52.65 in the prelims, a two-second add from his best of 3:50.66.
In the 800 free, McCann was seeded 8th in 8:00.45. He added 11 seconds in the final, swimming 8:11.34 to finish 9th overall.
His scratch moved Isle of Man 14-year-old Oscar Maddrell into the fastest heat. Maddrell’s highest finish at this meet has come in the 800 freestyle, where he swam 8:40.24 to finish 12th, a one-second drop from his seed of 8:41.34.
Maddrell is seeded in 16:32.84 for tonight’s 1500 free final.
