ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The threat tracker is back to green as heavier rain showers continue to move off to our east. Most of the heaviest rain Monday night through Tuesday stayed well into the Southern Tier, though some hefty downpours were seen in central and southern Monroe County overnight and early this morning.
The rest of Tuesday evening will quiet down. A few passing showers will linger through the evening and overnight, but heavy rainfall is not expected. Tonight’s temperatures will drop near 66 degrees for Rochester overnight with higher elevations of the Southern Tier dropping into the low-60s. Dew point temperatures will linger in the low to mid 60s, so the air will feel a bit humid overnight. Winds stay out of the northwest between 5 to 10 mph. Thin surface smoke does linger through this evening, however, air quality is expected to stay on the low-end of moderate. Very limited wildfire smoke may linger into Wednesday, but Rochester’s air quality index is forecasted to stay in the healthy range for Wednesday.
The center of low pressure will hover between central and upstate New York through Wednesday which will support some scattered showers for Rochester and the surrounding region. A corridor of heavier, more widespread rain will wrap around the center of this system, moving north to south, through the second half of Wednesday. This band will likely sit between central and the eastern portion of western New York, so periods of more widespread rain may be possible later on Wednesday. High temperatures only reach near 70 degrees on Wednesday due to a breezy northwesterly wind and ample cloud coverage. Winds are expected to stay between 10 and 20 mph throughout Wednesday. Showers decrease in coverage overnight with low temperatures nearing 64 degrees.
Looking ahead: This slow-moving surface low finally starts to weaken on Thursday as it stalls over the Northeast coast. Though some scattered showers are still expected on Thursday, weather will be trending drier through the second half of Thursday into the overnight hours. Friday, the sun comes out and weather remains mostly dry into Saturday. Some daytime heating on Saturday may lead to isolated showers. Sunday, rain chances again increase and linger through the beginning of the following week as another stubborn area of low-pressure is expected to stall in the northeastern portion of the United States.
