A Vision for Rashkis + STEAM²

As a Rashkis parent, I am excited about the idea of one track from the STEAM² program joining our long-standing community. One of the main reasons I am excited is the vision of combining our two distinct cultures.
Rashkis culture entails a close-knit school with friendships, teacher-student relationships, community connection, and inclusivity of a diverse student body that is dear to my heart. My daughters have formed friendships with students from a variety of backgrounds, and they adore their teachers. Culture is often difficult to describe in words alone, limited as we are by language to fully capture the essence of that which matters most. Simply put: Rashkis, its teachers, staff, students, strong neighborhood connection, and diversity harmoniously form a culture that is an indelible part of the fabric of our community.
The STEAM² program undoubtedly has its own culture. I have not experienced this directly yet, but I am excited to learn and open my arms to its community. As a veteran who worked overseas with host-nation partner forces, I am keenly aware of how special it can be to combine cultures, side by side, toward a common goal; these lessons impacted me deeply. Here, the common goal is an enriching, supportive, and inclusive environment for our children to learn together. We as a people are stronger together when our cultures connect and enhance each other’s. A beautiful tapestry manifests as such only through each separate thread being woven – together. I look forward to Rashkis + STEAM². Let’s lay out a framework for what this vision can look like.
First, the Rashkis culture and the STEAM² culture must be allowed to exist as-is, with no disruption to their core elements. The great thing is, we as a district have a blueprint already from the Spanish Dual Language program existing alongside the traditional program at Carrboro Elementary. We should directly engage with and pull from this model, to ensure each program maintains its unique identity.
Second, with a commitment to keeping each culture intact and with a blueprint in-hand, we can then explore how to weave the elements together. For example, kids from Rashkis may now have the opportunity to attend a performance or schoolwork display that the students in the Mandarin program put on, distinct to their roots. We may be able to have shared recesses and lunch, where kids can comingle and ask each other questions. We can leverage The House, where students at Rashkis join groups separate from their own classrooms to connect with a broader coalition and explore ways to act in line with our ROARS principles: respectful, organized, active learners, responsible, and safe. STEAM² students can join The House; this may instantly form tangible connection points. There are likely other ways to form bonds and connections. I trust that our school leaders, parents, and students can find ways to weave the Rashkis threads and STEAM² threads into an amazing tapestry. This will take hard work and focused dedication. I am excited about what will be created. I want this for my daughters.
Change inherently brings about challenges and uncertainty. We must then, as a community, rise to the occasion and bring these two distinct cultures together, and in doing so we will strengthen the very fabric at the heart of Chapel Hill schools.
