Acts of heroism, selflessness emerge after Monday's powerful storms ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Monday’s intense storms led to several close calls across the Chicago area. But by luck and through the help of others, in some cases complete strangers, people who survived life-threatening moments.

In south suburban Lansing, residents were dealing with devastating loss but no reports of serious injuries.

NBC Chicago found stories of survival near Oakwood Avenue and 192nd Street.

“She was out and said, ‘Somebody help me get my husband!’ He’s sick and had cancer, so we ripped the window open,” said resident Tiffany Fliszar.

Neighbors like Fliszar swooped in to help Deniz Sidkey, who was trapped in his home.

“I’m lucky to be alive,” he said.

Sidkey’s ceiling came down on him as his wife in the bedroom next door; she was miraculously unscathed, save for a bruised hand.

“It was unbelievable,” Sidkey said. “I don’t even know who the one guy is.”

The Lansing resident said he was inside his kitchen when the storm hit.

“I was stuck between the window and outside, so he pulled me back in and opened the door,” he said.

NBC Chicago crews got a firsthand look at the extensive damage – plenty of downed trees and wires and even some roofs torn off homes.

Resident Twanna Austin’s family had several generations rush to the basement.

“As soon as we grabbed him out of the chair it busted out my windows, and I didn’t know till I went upstairs that it took down one of my bedroom walls,” she said.

Austin then had a stark realization.

“If my husband had been sitting in that window, in that chair, it probably would’ve killed him because it hit hard,” she said.

In Homewood, a gigantic tree, perhaps around 8 feet wide, crashed down onto the street.

Over in Hazel Crest, bricks and siding blew off the walls of an apartment building, and in Markham, the roof of a commercial building sailed off.

In the aftermath of the destruction, some were left breathing a bittersweet sigh of relief.

“I thought I only had nine lives more than that,” Sidkey said.
