It’s been picked up over the decades by the Bobby Fuller Four, who had a hit with it in 1965, and later by the Clash, Roy Orbison, Steve Earle, and the Dead Kennedys, among others.
Two years after that, Curtis traveled to Nashville to play on Holly's first recording sessions. By 1957, when Holly formed the Crickets, Curtis had already moved on to other work.
As the new lineup began work on its first post-Holly album, In Style with the Crickets, Curtis brought several songs he'd already written, including "I Fought the Law.”
“I lived over in Slaton, Texas at the time, and I was sitting in my living room at about four in the afternoon. It was a hot, dusty day, and we were having one of those West Texas sandstorms. The song just came to me all at once, and I don’t remember ever writing it down.”
Curtis couldn't have known it then, but "I Fought the Law" was just beginning to find its audience. Within a few years, it would grow into one of rock's most recognizable songs, and Curtis has a theory as to why.
That simplicity paid off when the Bobby Fuller Four picked up the song several years later, turning it into a No. 9 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
The song kept finding new homes after that. First the Clash took it on, then Hank Williams Jr., then Green Day, each one putting their own spin on it.
He's just as fond of the versions that followed. “Green Day did a terrific version that brings it right up to date,” Curtis said.
