Video shows water leaking through ceiling at O'Hare as severe storms pound Chicago area ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Severe thunderstorms with 70 mph winds, hail the size of baseballs and heavy downpours were moving across the Chicago area Monday, leading the National Weather Service to warn of damage to roofs, homes, vehicles and more.

The storms also led to more than 100,000 people in the Chicago area without power, and ground stops issued at both O’Hare and Midway Airports.

Across the Chicago area, video and photos captured rain and hail pounding down on cars and streets. At O’Hare Airport, video obtained by NBC Chicago showed water leaking through the roof of the ceiling at near Gate B33.

The damage comes as severe thunderstorm warnings continue for parts of the Chicago area, including in Lake, DuPage, Cook, Kankakee and Will Counties in Illinois and Newton and Jasper Counties in Indiana through at least 1:30 p.m.

Tornado warnings were also issued for parts of Cook, Will and DuPage County in Illinois, and in Lake County in Indiana. In some parts, storms with the potential to produce a tornado dropped hail the size of ping-pong balls and baseballs.

“This is a destructive storm,” the NWS warned, with winds as high as 100mph. “Flying debris may be deadly to those without shelter.”

About 12:30 p.m., tornado sirens went off in Naperville, Orland Park and Bolingbrook, residents said. Across the entire area, skies were dark.

A second round of storms could develop later Monday evening, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, starting about 6 p.m. Those storms may be less widespread, with pop-up storms possible. A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for the entire Chicago area, including northwest Indiana through 8 p.m.

The Storm Prediction Center placed the entire Chicago area under an “enhanced” threat of severe weather Monday, which ranks as level three of five.

The storms come as heat advisories and extreme heat warnings across the entire Chicago area continue until 9 p.m. Monday.
