Four teenagers from the northwest suburbs were killed in a car crash in Chicago’s West Lawn neighborhood Sunday, with the incident stemming from a police pursuit and ending with the car speeding off a bridge and into the box car of a freight train.
Chicago police said officers responded about 2:16 a.m. in the 6900 block of South Cicero after reports from a caller that someone inside a vehicle had pointed a gun at another vehicle. CPD located the car in question and attempted to a traffic stop, but the driver sped away.
In the 5500 block of South Cicero, Illinois State Police also attempted a traffic stop on the car, CPD said. The driver initially stopped the vehicle but then fled again at a high rate of speed.
The driver lost control of the vehicle as it sped away, police said, careening off the side of a bridge and over a set of railroad tracks. It then struck the box car of a freight train.
Three of the four occupants inside the car were pronounced dead at the scene. The fourth, a female, was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
Photos and video from the crash showed it may have involved a red pickup truck.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office released the names of those who died late Sunday:
