As Patrick Kane returns to the Chicago Blackhawks, another franchise legend may soon get his flowers in a unique way.
Former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews, who announced his retirement from the NHL earlier this season, didn’t get a chance to skate one more time with his first team prior to that announcement, but that won’t stop Chicago from honoring him in some way.
During Friday’s press conference, Blackhawks President of Hockey Operations Kyle Davidson was asked if the team plans to honor Toews at some point by signing him to a one-day contract, thereby allowing him to put on the team’s uniform one more time.
While Davidson didn’t commit to such a move, he conceded that it was a “likely” tribute to the player who was the captain of three Stanley Cup-winning teams in the 2010s.
“I think it’s something we would love to have Jonathan back and bring him back,” he said. “Nothing’s set in stone or anything, but I think it’s a likely path that we’ll go down. It’s a guy we just want to recognize and make sure that he’s honored.”
Toews and Kane were one of the most formidable duos in Chicago sports history, and their collective records ensured they’d be enshrined in Blackhawks history forever. The duo helped the team to win Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015, and they each earned several individual accolades in their careers, with Toews winning the Conn Smythe and Selke trophies and Kane collecting the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies.
Both players were also named to the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players list during the league’s centennial season, and both are considered surefire Hockey Hall of Famers when they become eligible for the honor.
Davidson praised Toews’ commitment to the Blackhawks, and to the fans’ continued adoration for a player who earned the nickname “Captain Serious.”
“He’s a Blackhawk for life,” Davidson said. “Everything he’s contributed to the city, the love and respect he has from the organization and the fans. It’s just unparalleled for these guys that were part of those three Stanley Cups.”
