GOLD – Josh Liendo (CAN), 50.42 *Commonwealth Games Record* SILVER – Matt Temple (AUS), 50.43 BRONZE – Ben Armbruster (AUS), 50.58

Just a day after a Commonwealth Games record-setting performance from Australia’s Matt Temple in the 100 butterfly semifinals, Canada’s Josh Liendo played spoiler to the party, topping Temple’s semis swim to nab gold in 50.42.

That time for Liendo still sits off of his Commonwealth record of 49.99 from 2024, but it helped him defend his title from 2022, where he touched in 51.24.

Liendo would not win without some challenge, as both Temple and Ben Armbruster both managed to swim under that day-old standard from the semis to fill out the podium in 50.43 and 50.58, respectively.

Splits Comparison:

Pre-Meet Record: Chad Le Clos (2018) Matthew Temple Semifinals Swim (Initial Record) Josh Liendo Finals Swim (New CG Record) Matt Temple Finals Swim Ben Armbruster Finals Swim 50 23.7 23.64 23.48 23.80 23.48 100 26.96 26.99 26.94 26.63 27.10 Final Time 50.65 50.63 50.42 50.43 50.58

Liendo and Armbruster went out stroke for stroke, touching tied at the turn in 23.48. Off the turn, Temple began to surge, outs-splitting his fellow countryman Armbruster by nearly a half second coming home. Though it came down to the final strokes, it would be Liendo, the Olympic silver medalist, getting his hands on the wall first by just one hundredth of a second ahead of Temple in 50.42.

Armbruster, the bronze medal finisher here, swam a major best time, dropping more than three tenths of a second from his previous best of 50.91 from the TYR Summer Championships in June of 2025 to get himself on the podium.
