After not playing a home match for more than two months, San Diego FC kicked off the second half of its season on Saturday with something that had been hard to come by: a win at Snapdragon Stadium.
Before a crowd of 24,489, SDFC upset FC Dallas 1-0 for its first home win since a 5-0 victory against Austin FC on May 13 in its first home game following MLS’ mid-season break to accommodate the FIFA Men’s World Cup.
SDFC head coach Mikey Varas said after the game that he considered the victory one of his favorite games for the squad.
“Overall, it was a really complete performance from the team,” he said. “What we did really well tonight, which we haven’t always done, is we managed possessions at the end. We weren’t just rushing everything forward, and it didn’t become as big of a see-saw game. That was a really good step for us.”
The match’s lone goal came early in the second half when during the 50th minute, central midfielder Alejandro Alvarado Jr. nailed a right-footed shot to the bottom-right corner of the net. Teammate Manu Duah was credited with the assist.
This was not only Alvarado’s first start of the season, but also his first goal with SDFC. After scoring what would become the game winner, he ran to Varas, who gave him a big hug, then ran over to his teammates to celebrate with them.
Alvarado had spent much of the past 12 months out with a severe knee injury that require surgery. He suffered the injury in late June 2025 and returned to action as a reserve this past April but hadn’t started a game until Saturday.
“I’m happy to contribute to the win,” he said during the post-match press conference. “I’m thankful for the opportunity. It was a hard year where I had to overcome a tough injury, and thankfully with the help of my teammates and with the help of the staff, I was able to do it, and thankfully here we are.”
With the victory, San Diego improved its record to 5-7, with five draws. The team now sits in 12th place in the MLS table with 20 points. FC Dallas, meanwhile, now has a 7-5-5 record and falls to sixth place in the table with 26 points.
This was SDFC’s second match back since the World Cup break; on July 22 they lost 1-0 on the road at Colorado, beginning a stretch of 10 matches over five and-a-half weeks for San Diego.
SDFC now goes on the road to face Minnesota United FC at Allianz Field on Aug. 1. After that, San Diego plays three straight games against Liga MX teams as part of the annual Leagues Cup tournament, where the top MLS clubs from the previous season compete against Mexican league franchises.
In that tournament, San Diego will face Club América in Mexico City on Aug. 6 before hosting the Xolos of Tijuana and Club Puebla at Snapdragon Stadium on Aug. 9 and 12, respectively.
Notes: During the first half, a small plane flew a banner over the stadium bearing the demands “Fire Mikey & Tyler [and] Free Chucky — The Fans,” calling for both Varas and sporting director/general manager Tyler Heaps to be ousted as well as making reference to forward Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, who hasn’t played at all for SDFC this season despite being cleared for action amid disputes with the organization.
