Egypt’s petroleum sector, in cooperation with British Petroleum company (BP), is preparing to bring the North Fayoum-4 gas well in the Mediterranean Sea online in the near term, with expected production estimated at around 80 million cubic feet of natural gas per day.
The move comes as part of the Petroleum and Mineral Resources Ministry’s strategy to boost domestic natural gas production, maximize the use of existing infrastructure and reduce reliance on imports.
According to a ministry statement, the production increase follows the successful completion of a new sidetrack operation at the well under BP’s drilling program aimed at expanding gas output in Egypt.
The operation enabled the well to be brought back into production from new reservoirs without the need to drill a separate well, representing what the ministry described as an innovative engineering solution that adds new output in a short timeframe while minimizing costs and optimizing the use of existing wells and production facilities.
The ministry said work teams overcame technical challenges associated with restarting the well and completed all required operations in line with the highest safety and efficiency standards.
The targeted reservoirs are located at depths exceeding 3,000 meters, paving the way for the start of production and the addition of new gas volumes to support domestic demand, reduce the country’s import bill and strengthen Egypt’s energy security.
