TODAY: Keller’s contract has been officially selected. Tanner Banks was moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL create a 40-man roster spot, and a 26-man roster spot was opened up when Alex McFarlane was optioned to Triple-A yesterday. The Phillies also called up left-hander Kyle Backhus from Triple-A and optioned right-hander Max Lazar to Lehigh Valley.
JULY 24: Right-hander Brian Keller is with the Phillies and will be added to the roster ahead of tomorrow’s game, reports Matt Gelb of The Athletic. He will either start the game or work as a bulk guy behind an opener. The Phillies will need to make corresponding moves to get Keller onto the active and 40-man rosters.
Keller, 32, took a unique and winding road to the majors. He was a 39th-round pick of the Yankees back in 2016. He was with that club through 2021, climbing as high as Triple-A. The Red Sox plucked him away in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft and he spent 2022 with Triple-A Worcester.
He became a free agent after that season and signed with the Hanshin Tigers of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. Per Sam Jellinek, broadcaster for the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, Keller required Tommy John surgery shortly after arriving in Japan and then required yet another surgery in 2024. Due to those surgeries, he hardly pitched at all for the 2023 to 2025 period.
He signed a minor league deal with the Phillies in May. He made a couple of appearances in the Complex League before getting sent to Triple-A and has been in good form since then. He has logged 36 1/3 innings over eight starts with a 2.23 earned run average. His four-seamer his averaging 92.6 miles per hour as he also mixes in a cutter, sinker, slider and curveball.
He has gotten some help from a .231 batting average on balls in play and 90.3% strand rate but his 26% strikeout rate, 7.3% walk rate and 41.5% ground ball rate are all average or better. His 4.24 FIP thinks he has been very lucky but could still be serviceable without all the help from the baseball gods.
The Phillies surely aren’t expecting him to be an ace but they do need someone to absorb some innings. They started the year with Andrew Painter in their rotation but he got optioned to the minors over a month ago after putting up a 7.06 ERA over 14 appearances. They haven’t found a decent replacement for him since then. Alan Rangel has made a few appearances, sometimes starting and sometimes behind an opener. He put up a 5.75 ERA in five appearances since Painter was sent down.
The club seems likely to address the rotation via the trade market before the August 3 deadline. But for now, they have Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sánchez, Jesús Luzardo, Aaron Nola and a hole behind those four.
Keller getting a shot to make a big league appearance is an incredible story but it may be a brief call-up. The Phils have Luzardo going tonight. After Keller is the bulk guy on Saturday, they will likely go to Sánchez, Wheeler, Nola and then back to Luzardo through Wednesday. The team has an off-day on Thursday. They then play 14 in a row but could bolster their roster with trade acquisitions during that stretch. However it plays out, it’s inspiring for Keller to get this shot after going through such a long and arduous journey.
