The criticism of Bo Nix has been increasing lately.
But that’s the reality of being a starting quarterback in the NFL. Especially in the Mile High City, which has been home to quarterback royalty.
So, where can Nix improve?

Broncos fans have a love-hate relationship with their quarterback and Denver’s offense.
They love the winning, but hate the constant short dump-off passing game that has been the norm the last two years here.
Both of the last two seasons, Nix has been around the worst in the league in yards per pass attempt. He was 28th (6.4 Y/A) in 2025 and 29th in 2024. Sean Payton’s screen passing game drives people crazy because it’s not attacking down field.
Interestingly, that’s what former Chargers linebacker Manti Te’o said of Nix on Good Morning Football a few days ago.
“It starts and ends with Bo Nix,” Te’o said. “When I watched Bo Nix last year, I saw–well, when I watched the Denver Broncos offense in general, I saw a different type of offense run by Sean Payton that I know Sean Payton doesn’t want to do, and that’s an offense that stresses a defense horizontally. Knowing Sean Payton, he wants to throw that ball down the field.”
“Bo Nix needs to throw that thing down the field. Because if he [can] throw that ball down the field, that forces those safeties, … to respect the deep game and back those boys up. I didn’t see defenses respect the deep ball that much. So, they brought those safeties in.”
Throwing the ball short is a safe way to operate an offense, definitely. And Nix has been great at not turning the ball over or taking sacks, leading the NFL in negative play rate.
But the converse is how much harder it is to convert drives to points when you’re dinking and dunking down the field.
Jordan Palmer says defenses not afraid of Denver attacking deep
While Te’o’s criticism was seemingly out of nowhere, it’s also been circulating around the league.
Last year on the 89 with Steve Smith and James Palmer Podcast, both hosts broke down what they were seeing as limitations in Nix’s game. And what they were saying sounds familiar.
“I had a defensive coordinator tell me if they’re not running the football well…we’ve got no concern about Bo beating us deep,” Palmer explained.
There are two issues going on with the Broncos passing game simultaneously.
First, Payton has called a ton of screens and other short passes at and even behind the line of scrimmage. That sucks the defense up to the line and makes those short passes even less effective.
Second, Nix doesn’t throw the ball deep with accuracy. So, it’s a bit of a chicken or the egg situation.
Last year, Nix missed deep ball after deep ball early in the year. He missed Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims in the Chargers game that came down to overtime and resulted in a loss. And he way overthrew Troy Franklin against the Jets, too, because he was running toward the line of scrimmage when he threw.
In passes over 10 yards, Nix’s completion percentage was a terrible 47.6% last year. Compare that to the red hot 70.4% on passes under 10 yards and it’s easy to see the stark difference.
The addition of Jaylen Waddle should help with his deeper passing because Waddle is a master of getting open. Both over the middle as well as on deep routes. Plus, defenses will put their attention on Waddle which will help Sutton, Franklin, and Mims all get open easier.
All Nix has to do is hit them with the football. And his guys need to haul in the ball.
Denver’s receiving corps had the second-most drops last year to only Jacksonville.
It will also be interesting to see if Davis Webb calling the plays will change anything for Nix and the offense. Will Webb dial up more deeper passing rather than the constant screens? Or even mix in crossing routes here and there?
That would do wonders for Bo and Co.
Nix and the Broncos veterans will be showing up to training camp on Tuesday, July 28. We’ll get our first glimpses of how Sean Payton’s offense will evolve with Webb holding the play sheet.
