ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester will host the third-annual Baldwin Richardson Foods Frederick Douglass HBCU Classic Weekend of Hope, featuring four days of events for local students.
The celebration will end on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, where Lincoln University will face Virginia State University in the HBCU Classic football game. Regardless of the final score, organizers say this is far more than a football game.
“We’re really hoping it becomes a lifestyle for the city youth of Rochester, that they understand that they have options, that they don’t just have to go out and be in the streets hanging out, that there is something for them after they graduate from high school. And HBCUs can be a great option,” said Mone Barkley, from the HBCU classic committee.
Accompanying events include a college expo, the HBCU Experience for younger students and a Battle of the Bands after the game.
HBCU College Expo
Rochester-area high school junior and seniors will be able to meet with representatives from dozens of historically Black colleges and universities during the college expo on Wednesday, Sept. 30, at Blue Cross Arena.
HBCU Experience
New this year, there will be the “HBCU Experience,” on Thursday, Oct. 1. At this event, students in grades 7-10 will be introduced to cultural and educational opportunities HBCU offers through music, dancers, entertainment, and engagements with local HBCU alumni.
HBCU Day
The day before the game on Friday, Oct. 2, people are encouraged to wear their favorite HBCU gear, apparel, or colors and share photos on social media.
Kickoff for the game on Oct. 3 is set for 1 p.m. Tickets for the game start at $25. Tickets include access to the tailgate, game, and battle of the bands.
