The award-winning OB Brewery is up for sale and the owner, who has operated businesses on the same block for over 40 years, is retiring.
Mike Tajran said that he is stepping aside because of health issues that limit his ability to work.
His OB Brewery, part of Newport Avenue for a decade, has won multiple awards for its craft beer.
The brewery is three stories tall with a balcony on the top floor that offers a view of the ocean, the pier and the surrounding hillside.
“I designed it in a way, so it would give you the feeling of being on a boat,” Tajran said.
Tajran said that he hopes to sell the business to someone younger who can take the brewery to new heights.
“I hope I get someone that could expand it and make it go to the next level,” Tajran said. “Ocean Beach deserves that reputation and deserves us there.”
Jim Millea, the head brewer at OB Brewery, has been working there since it opened in July 2016.
Millea said that a lot of the brewery employees and patrons are residents of Ocean Beach, giving the business a special local vibe. Millea said he hopes that whoever takes over the brewery is able to preserve that community feeling.
“I think it presents possibly a good opportunity for someone else to come in and maybe make this place even better than it already is,” Millea said.
Denny Knox, the executive director at Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, said that she hopes that whoever takes over the brewery cares about the community as much as Tajran does.
“It’s an asset for the community,” Knox said. “We want it to continue to be.”
Knox said that she appreciated how involved the brewery was in some of Ocean Beach’s popular community gatherings, including tasting events.
“They’re like a team member,” Knox said.
If community members are grateful for the brewery, Tajran is also thankful for their support of his business. OB Brewery
“I couldn’t say more than thank you, Ocean Beach, for taking us in and making such a successful operation,” he said.
