ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester-based company started by an RIT graduate launched its first product this week, a smart toilet seat that can track your health information.
News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke visited Casana, the Rochester-based company bringing the “Smart Seat” to market.
While a lot of people have wearable devices like smart watches that track basic health information, you must remember to charge it, put it on, and wear it regularly. RIT alum Nick Conn considered that when he invented the first smart toilet seat. “It’s something that you don’t need to re-learn or to remember to do, and because the seat has an incredibly long battery life, you also don’t need to worry about charging it,” Conn says.
The Smart Seat monitors blood pressure trends, heart rate, blood oxygen, and respiratory rates. The seat can gather that data for up to five adults at your home. “It only looks at data from people who have been registered on that seat,” Conn says.
But what happens if your heart rate gets a little elevated when you’re struggling or stressed in the bathroom? “If you’re straining or if you rush to the bathroom and your heart rate is declining over time as you’re seated, we can account for that with the algorithms that we have,” Conn says.
There are no cameras or microphones in the seat. The health data gathered is encrypted and uploaded to the cloud and can only be viewed by customers who sign up and download the app.
The Smart Seat was invented in Rochester, developed here and clinically tested here. “We had folks come in from all over and participate in our studies, we sent a number of people home with seats for a long period of time as well,” Conn explains.
With investments from Google and Bemis, the largest toilet seat company in the world, Casana is now headquartered in Rochester and officially launched the Smart Seat this week. “I’m really excited that this is finally going to reach people’s hands and get on their toilet seats at home,” Conn says.
The Smart Seat is $200. You get two years’ worth of monitoring on the app for that price too.
While anyone can use one of the seats in their home, Casana is also hoping that nursing and assisted living facilities may be interested, or caretakers of elderly loved ones who want to keep a close eye on health data and trends.
