Rangers catcher Danny Jansen hit the injured list with a forearm/elbow injury back in early June. He’s been shelved for close to eight weeks as he tried to gut through what’s apparently a UCL injury of some significance. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that Jansen has recently resumed throwing and is determining whether he can gut it out through the injury. Jansen himself tells Grant he’ll have to make a decision on whether to undergo an internal brace procedure in the next two to three weeks. That’d obviously wipe out the remainder of his season.
Given the disparity between how much throwing they do, the recovery period for position players is naturally less than that for pitchers on this type of injury. Grant suggests that if Jansen indeed undergoes surgery in the next couple weeks, he’ll have a chance to be ready for Opening Day 2027 (…assuming it starts on time).
Jansen, 31, is in the first season of a two-year, $14.5MM contract. It hasn’t gone as hoped. Prior to hitting the injured list, he stepped to the plate 142 times and produced only a .171/.277/.309 batting line. Jansen’s 9.2% walk rate was solid but down from recent seasons, when he was north of 12%. He’s seen notable dips in his hard-hit rate, barrel rate and line-drive rate and produced the second-most grounders of his career on a rate basis. Statcast graded him well in terms of his ability to block balls in the dirt but dinged both his throwing and framing.
Based on the offensive trends, it’s fair to presume that Jansen’s elbow has bothered him prior to his IL placement. He certainly didn’t hit well early in the year, but he carried a .211/.282/.380 slash through May 1. That’s an 84 wRC+ or, put another way, 16% worse than average production at the plate after weighting for his pitcher-friendly home park. (The average catcher this year has been about 12% below average at the plate.) From May 2 onward, Jansen posted a calamitous .115/.270/.212 slash in 64 plate appearances.
Jansen’s injury status is extra problematic for the Rangers, given that fellow backstop Kyle Higashioka just went on the injured list this week. The Rangers have journeymen Elias Díaz and Austin Wynns as their two catchers right now. It’s not a particularly feasible pairing on which to rely for a club that hopes to contend.
Of course, the extent to which Texas hopes to contend will hinge on how they play over the next 10 days. At 51-51, they’re jostling with the Mariners (51-52) for the top spot in the AL West. The Astros (50-54) have shaken off a horrendous start to the season and rallied to be in both the division and Wild Card race. If that didn’t already underscore how important the next 10 days are for them, this next fact should: Texas plays seven of its final 10 pre-deadline games against … the Mariners and Astros. They’re hosting Seattle for a four-game series that’ll kick off tonight. The Rangers then travel to Florida to take on the AL-best Rays for three games before flying to Houston for three against a resurgent Astros squad.
A sweep or even a series win this weekend could hasten the front office’s urgency to add. A sweep by the Mariners or a series loss to them might send president of baseball operations Chris Young in the opposite direction.
If the Rangers can navigate this 10-game stretch at a .500 or better clip, it stands to reason that Young, GM Ross Fenstermaker and the rest of the staff will have catching help on their deadline checklist. Texas needs help in plenty of areas — rotation depth, bullpen, outfield, middle infield — if the team plays well enough to merit buying. On the flip side, if Texas wilts in the next week-plus, then impending free agents like Joc Pederson, Jakob Junis, Tyler Alexander and Higashioka (depending on his return timeline) could all find themselves on the move. Arb-eligible players with dwindling club control (e.g. MacKenzie Gore, Jake Burger, Josh Jung in particular) figure to draw interest as well, but the team wouldn’t be under too much pressure to force a move unless presented with a particularly strong offer.
