BATAVIA, N.Y. — A family of four escaped a two-alarm fire that destroyed their home on Lewiston Road in Batavia.
The Genesee County fire coordinator said the fire started in a garage where a lawn mower caught fire, spreading to the rest of the house. Two adults, two children, a dog and two cats were able to escape the fire unharmed, but one more cat remains missing.
“We had a fully engulfed garage fire that had spread to the house, and we had smoke coming out the eaves on the house,” says Town of Batavia Assistant Chief Brian Bentley.
The house is expected to be lost. The Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay.
Crews from the town and city of Batavia, Oakfield, Alabama, East Pembroke, Stafford, Elba, and Alexander were on the scene.
