A man was killed and three others were injured Wednesday evening after a speeding Porsche caused a nine-car pileup in Pacific Beach, police said.
A 59-year-old man driving a Porsche Cayman rear-ended a 32-year-old man driving a Kia while he was stopped at a red light at the Garnet Avenue and Mission Bay Drive intersection, according to San Diego police investigators.
The impact from the Porsche caused a chain reaction that involved nine vehicles.
Medics took the man in the Kia to a hospital where doctors pronounced him dead. Three occupants of other vehicles suffered minor injuries.
Police arrested the Porsche driver on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter at the scene. Use of alcohol is not considered a factor in the wreck.
Garnet Avenue at Mission Bay Drive has been a focus of city efforts to improve traffic safety.
In January, officials said that San Diego traffic engineers had identified Garnet and Mission Bay Drive as one of 14 priority intersections for safety improvements.
The analysis was part of a review of 2024 collision data from intersections where five or more crashes causing deaths or injuries had occurred. The team also studied patterns, street segments with the most injury crashes and intersections with the most crashes involving pedestrians.
The 14 intersections, according to the city, “have been prioritized for further traffic engineering evaluation and potential safety enhancements.”
Among the recommendations for the locations are additional signs, flashing beacons, upgraded traffic signal lights and replacement of or additional speed limit signs.
