ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State says nearly 270 officers, troopers, and federal agents have completed their training to detect car insurance fraud, as part of the state’s new law aiming to lower car insurance premiums by combating fraud.
New York State Police is partnering with the state’s Department of Financial Services to train officials in detecting, investigating, and prosecuting financial crimes, including car insurance fraud. So far, officials from 55 different state, local, and federal agencies have completed their training at the NYSP Academy in Albany.
NYSP plans to permanently incorporate financial crimes training in its curriculum for the Bureau of Criminal Investigation. State Police leaders say they’re aiming to promote partnerships across departments when it comes to investigating insurance fraud.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says the state is experiencing a sharp increase in car insurance fraud reports and the burden is falling on law-abiding car owners. As News10NBC has covered, Hochul’s plan to reduce premiums involves cracking down on staged crashes, such as when a driver cuts off another car and then stops abruptly, to get an insurance payout. However, some parts of her plan are more contentious, such as policies that would cap pain and suffering damages for drivers injured in some types of crashes.
Hochul’s plan calls for capping payouts for drivers engaged in criminal behavior at the time of the crash, including uninsured drivers, drunk drivers, and drivers committing a felony. That means an uninsured driver, for example, would face a $100,000 cap on non-economic damage if they were seriously injured in a crash, even if the crash wasn’t their fault.
