PENFIELD, N.Y. — The Penfield community is stepping up after a massive fire destroyed Bauman’s Farm Market on Five Mile Line Road.

People came by to look at the burnt remains and give their well wishes to the Baumans.
Cathy Klein, who lives nearby, says this is a loss for the whole community. Her kids grew up coming to this farm and she has a bouquet of their flowers at her home right now.
“I’ve been here probably at least once a week getting whatever vegetables I need. It became a tradition to come on Mother’s Day and get all of our flowers,” Klein said.
Klein is hopeful that Bauman’s will be able to recover and reopen. Herman’s Farm Market down the road wants to make sure that happens.
The business put a collection box next to its register. People have already been dropping cash and checks into the box.
“There’s a million different little things that you need. If we can raise a little money to help them out and give them some support, we’re always looking to support other farmers,” said Gary Herman, owner of Herman’s Farm Market & Cider Mill.
Herman says it’s important for farmers in this area to stick together.
“We’re all small farms, family farms. We’re all in this together and like all family farms it’s always a struggle and a lot of work. We know what they put into their market and we can really empathize with it,” Herman said.
Dan Bauman, the son of the owners at Bauman’s, says it’s been a somber day but he’s thankful for all the support.
“The affection that the community has given us is beyond words that I can express. We’re very, very happy to be a staple in this town and to have such an outpouring of affection,” Bauman said.
Bauman says they will be able to keep farming and wholesaling. The Monroe County Fire Bureau is still investigating the cause of the fire, although no one was hurt.
