FAIRPORT, N.Y. — A train came dangerously close to hitting a group of kids on the tracks on Main Street after they refused to move until the last second.
A viewer sent News10NBC footage showing the train flashing its lights and blaring its horn as it approached the kids waving on the tracks. The crossing gates went down and the train’s horn continued to blare, but the kids didn’t move until the last second. Moments later, the train came to a full stop.
Nathan Marra sent News10NBC the video. Many people saw the incident in person and on the track’s YouTube livestream.
“It was very very scary,” one witness said.
Michael and Laci like to come watch the trains pass. Laci saw it firsthand.
“I had my tripod set up. I’m about to see a train coming and then there’s a group of teenagers,” Laci said. “And then like it was less than a second — everyone was able to move off the tracks and not get hit but it was a real close call. A real close call.”
When asked what she was thinking when she saw that, Laci said it was scary because none of them wanted to witness people getting killed.
“I witnessed someone getting hit by a train,” Michael said. “They were smushed — just the thought of that was awful and it lingered with me for days and I never want to witness that again.”
News10NBC reporter Erin Mahon stopped by the police department to follow up on its response to the incident. The chief wasn’t in at the time but was able to call back later in the day.
“The officers were down there within minutes and obviously you know we checked the tracks, we checked all around. Obviously we couldn’t find anybody,” Chief Andrew Whitaker said.
When asked what the response looks like when dealing with that age demographic, Whitaker said, “When you’re dealing with children, depending on the age, you can’t charge them. But it’s more of talking to the parents and also talking to the kids and explaining the dangers of the tracks.”
Chief Whitaker also noted police monitor the camera feed that faces the tracks. In addition, CSX is going to patrol the tracks in direct response to this incident to ensure people stay off them. Police have not identified the kids in the video but said they’re working to do so in order to speak with them and their parents about the dangers of this situation.
